Upgraded to DotNetNuke 5.4.0 and want the new features?

So perhaps you just upgraded to the new version of DotNetNuke, V05.04.00 but you aren’t seeing the new features that are available in the Community Edition of the platform (The Telerik RAD Editor and the Ribbon Control Panel).

That is because the features are only enabled by default for new installs, the upgrade doesn’t turn them on, so I’m here to show you how! It’s pretty easy, but I always recommend you backup your website and database before you make any major changes. While these two changes are pretty minor, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Enabling the Telerik RAD Editor in DotNetNuke 5.4.0

Enabling the Telerik RAD Editor in DNN requires you to make a simple change to the DotNetNuke web.config file that can be found in the root of your website on the file system. When you open the file up find the following section of the web.config file

image

You will need to change the defaultProvider=”FckHtmlEditorProvider” setting to be defaultProvider=”TelerikEditorProvider”

image

Once you’ve done that simply save the changes to the web.config file and reload your website! Then any modules that use the standard DNN text editor control should be using Telerik instead of FCK.

Enabling the Ribbon Bar Control Panel in DotNetNuke 5.4.0

Enabling the Ribbon Bar Control Panel is actually even easier to do! This is done by visiting the Host/Host Settings page. From there scroll down to the Other Settings section and expand that section of the page.

image

In the dropdown list for the Control Panel Setting choose the RIBBONBAR setting.

Update your Host Settings and that should do it!

Enjoy the new features of DNN 5.4! I’m off to upgrade more of my sites.

Telerik's own provider provides a module that can switch providers. DotNetNuke's provider should do it this way, too!

I enabled the Telerik RAD Editor but i have found that the media managers do not work. If I click on Image Manager, the manager opens but there are no images or folders shown in the manager.

Mike, I just tested and my upgraded site and the fresh install using 5.4 are both working for images. Do you get an error message?

I seem to be in the same boat as not images showing in new media manager. No errors in log

Thanks for sharing. I have managed to upgrade my DNN website to DNN5.4 and all works great. I did notice that this DNN version has used the latest ASP.NET 4.0 framework. Luckily, my host http://www.asphostcentral.com have supported ASP.NET 4.0 and therefore, I can upgrade it without so much hassles. Thus, there is one important thing to add. Please make sure ASP.NET 4.0 is installed prior to upgrading.

Those of you having trouble viewing images, are you sure you're double clicking the right folders? The pane on the right is for image preview, you need to get the images themselves to list in the middle pane. Took me a sec tofigure out

Intresting it looks like is only affecting my host account. A admin account i can browse fine.

That is odd Craig, as I tested mine with a host account?

Hello, I also enabled the Telerik RAD Editor after the 5.4.0 update. But the media managers do not show the button labels e.t.c. If I click on Image Manager, the manager opens but there are no button labels shown in the manager. Also after an 5.4.1 update there are no buttonlabels visible with admin or host login. With a new instal of 5.4.1 everything works fine!

DNN 5.4.2 installs correctly in a .net 3.5 SP1 integrated IIS 7.0, on GoDaddy Shared Hosting. With no proiblems.

I am still having the label problem. How did you manually make the language file? I have en-GB and en-US installed

Mike, what version are you currently running on?
Posted By: Chris Hammond on Thursday, June 10, 2010 10:51 AM
I have detailed how to make new en-gb language packs for the Telerik RADEditor in the company blog: http://www.solvd.co.uk/blog.aspx I still have the problem with no images being displayed in the media dialogs. Any ideas?

Upgraded test site to 5.4.2 and changed to the Telerik menu - now my editor window background is black. Any ideas? Using default skin.
